Workforce Training and Continuing Education


As the economy evolves and jobs change, needs for workforce training and continuing education also are in a process of evolution. A Community Needs Assessments involves several phases. The initial phase is data collection and involves completion of data gathering surveys in several communities in Northern Illinois. Results of these surveys will be shared with participating Chambers of Commerce and other organizations and with institutions supporting workforce education in the communities participating in the project.

Invitation for Pilot Project

If you would like such a project run for your local Community College District (see the map attached below), please contact DrM-Resources and we can begin a dialog. DrM-Resources is sponsoring the research for the first pilot project. Local Chambers of Commerce, the community colleges in the district, and other stakeholders are cordially invited to participate in deciding how to run the initial data collection and to make the data available to interested institutions. While a pilot project community college district has been proposed, if another district has a more urgent need, it will be considered for a pilot.



Note on Sponsorship and Affiliation

DrM-Resources is the sponsor for the research for the pilot project. DrM-Resources is not affiliated with any of the interested stakeholders. Interested stakeholders in the community college district being studied are invited to participate. These stakeholders will include local Chambers of Commerce, Community Colleges, and state universities, among others.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. To gain a better understanding of the community needs of Northern Illinois regarding workforce training and continuing education, we need to start with one area at a time.

The state of Illinois has divided the state into geographic areas supported by community colleges. (See the map attached to the Invitation to the Pilot Project above.)

The Kishwaukee Community College District is located largely in DeKalb County and includes parts of both Ogle and Lee Counties. It is supported by Kishwaukee College (KC) and is also home to Northern Illinois University (NIU). KC has recently reorganized its delivery support for workforce education and continuing education. The geographic area has an effective group of Chambers of Commerce and other organizations in contact with employers in the area. Given the timing and ease of access to the geography, this area is proposed by DrM-Resources as the first district to pilot the Community Needs Analysis.

The purpose of the pilot project is to gather data to be provided to participating organizations and the institutions that support them so that a clear and current community needs analysis of the workforce training and continuing education needs of the community can guide development of programs and curriculum and can inform community planning and development.


While a Community Needs Analysis can move through several phases, this pilot project is currently focused on the initial data collection phase--the design of a survey instrument and the collection of data from employers in the area. Participating organizations can make new decisions regarding the next phase once the initial data has been collected and made available to the stakeholders involved.
